Finding the Authentic Hook - Olympic Feat?
Every biennium we're treated with the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat - the Olympics. This year from Torino we're experiencing PR at its best - not only of the host city and country, but a great lesson of how to build a true personal interest story. No one does it better than Bob Costas (or rather his producers and writers), and we can all take a page from his book. There is a difference between news and a story - a story draws the reader or viewer in, connecting them in a way no facts, figures or b-roll can do. Finding the authentic essence of a story - what truly is a good "hook" - is what separates the PR hacks from the pros. It can be as simple as an athlete's background, his or her latest off-handed remark, or the most compelling of all, a tragic experience or failure and then a phoenix-like rise back to stardom. So in honor of the winter Olympics, consider what Bob Costas would say if he were to report on your company or executive this month.
